Eleven Miles of Night: Reading #114:

Ronald and Vera Jenkins wanted Jason to stay in their guest room until morning, but he refused. They also wanted to give him money for his troubles. He refused this offer as well.  
To Jason’s surprise, Ronald Jenkins seemed to have handled the encounter with the hellhounds better than he did. Certainly the old man had been fearful in anticipation of the encounter. This, Jason speculated, was largely because he had not believed that he was up to the task. But now that the danger had passed, Jenkins did not seem to be in any imminent danger of shock. He appeared oddly relaxed, in fact. Jason, meanwhile, knew that he was still shaking from horror and disbelief. He believed what he had seen, and at the same time, he did not believe it...
